Smithton Consolidated School District #130 offers a comprehensive core curriculum designed to meet the needs of the individual student and is consistent with current, evidence-based best practices in instruction and state standards. The district mission as a community working together to foster personal growth by providing an engaging learning environment, as well as our vision of developing the whole child who has the necessary skills to be a positive contributor to society helps lead district curriculum initiatives.
The Smithton School District delivers Kindergarten through 8th Grade instruction to students based on the Illinois Learning Standards. Illinois is one of 41 states to adopt the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) which target English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our Science curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). 44 states and the District of Columbia have adopted NGSS or similar standards.
While Pre-K in Illinois does not have a required curriculum, at Smithton School we use a research-based curriculum that is aligned with established preschool outcomes.
In addition to our core academic subjects, our school also offers classes in Art, Music, PE and STEM. Our district fosters a rich & nurturing environment that supports social and emotional development through direct instruction, consistent building expectations, positive and accepting culture and various clubs, organizations and activites.
Universal Screening of all students in grades K-8 occurs three times per year to identify students who may need access to intervention support for learning and behavior needs. Based on progress monitoring data, interventions vary in intensity and may include classroom interventions, reading interventionists and small group social work support.
SCCSD 130 is committed to developing these attributes in our students and believes that building relationships with students and families is essential to achieve the mission and vision.
